Commercial market squid harvesting
-
Doryteuthis opalescens (formerly Loligo oplaescens), aka "market squid" is harvested by purse seiners (vessels) working with their associated light boats. During the spawning season squid gather in huge numbers in shallow sandy-bottom habitats to mate and lay their egg capsules. These mollusks are attracted to the bright lights shining from the light boats, and form a big school or ball that is wrapped by a wall of net that is drawn up and closes at the top like a purse.
Tons of squid are then transported and off-loaded at sites along the shore. In this series of images, an off-load site at Ventura, CA is shown.
