A visual homage to a western Santa Barbara landmark. Please note that the oil seen on the surface of the water is attributed to the hundreds of natural oil and gas seeps on the ocean floor in the vicinity. It is one of most active seep zones in the world, some say. Some data has been said to show a decrease in natural seepage through the pumping activities of offshore oil platforms.
For years gas and oil from Platform Holly were pumped to storage tanks on the beach. The tanks were then emptied into fuel barges that were towed to LA and SF. Later, Holly's products were pumped into the existing shoreline pipelines. The tanks and barge system was discontinued.
It should be noted that Holly was located smack dab in the middle of the northern migratory path of the Pacific Gray Whales. Whales coming from winter calving and breeding grounds in Baja California passed by Holly every year from March through May on their way to summer feeding grounds in Alaska.
