2016 12-12 Meiss Road
-
Sue and I took a slow drive down Meiss Road from Dillard eastward about 5 miles. This was a route we took previously on 12-05, but it had rained quite a bit since last time and the dirt portion had large puddles and streams. This time we saw far less diversity. After glancing at eBird I had hopes of possible white-tailed kite sightings, or a burrowing owl.
There was one large harrier working back and forth across the road ahead of us, never close enough for a clear shot. A large turkey vulture remained on a fence post along the road and a few shots were garnered. There were two American kestrels. We followed the first one which was perched on the overhead wires. I got out and took some shots, but when I was within 40 or 50 yards, it took flight and perched another 50 yards down the road. A second kestrel came into the area once and the two birds interacted for a few seconds…talons raised up, etc. After this, both birds headed south across the pastures.
You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
