We took the Zamora off ramp from the northbound 5 and headed about 5 miles west towards the coast range. Along the way we passed a couple of paintball sites and numerous hunting fields with men carrying shotguns, with dogs and rhino ATVs, hunting quail.
The road becomes Hwy 14, and there was a post on the Birding California Facebook page about numerous raptors along Hwy 88 south of the 14. Hwy 14 is roughly paved for a short distance then turns to gravel and dirt. There are open grasslands and some large vineyards.
Wildlife included several harriers and a few red-tailed hawks. Most were on the ground or on a shallow perch but quickly took off when we got within a few hundred yards. On the way out on Hwy 14 a large raven perched on a fence post near the road stood by for a few pics.
