2018 02-01 Colusa NWR

This was our second trip to Colusa NWR, and our first on the driving tour route. Skies had thin, high clouds with lots of warm sunshine coming through. There was no fog and vistas ranged from Snow Mountain in the Mendocino Forest to The Buttes. The air temperature was in the middle 60’sF, and a gentle breeze from the north wafted through the wetlands.
The main road out to the bridge which starts the driving tour had some nice views of a gray ghost working the fields and Suellen spotted a lone bald eagle in a distant tree. The eagle came down, hovered just above the water, and then flew over to a distant sand bar (to feed?).
Several more harriers were seen, all were females. Also abundant were red-tailed hawks which were seen flying here and there as well as perched on trees, telephone poles, etc. A few nests were also seen as we passed along the lines of trees.
Flocks of flying geese were seen and heard overhead periodically, and most of the wetlands had snow geese and greater white-fronted geese resting in groups. Near the bridge a colony of black-crowned night herons was seen in the bushes and trees along the banks of one of the major canals.
All in all it was a beautiful day.
