We drove up to Morro Bay under bright sun with only a gentle breeze blowing on the coastal waters. We hoped to see a few sea otters which, in the past, were widely spread-out near Morro Rock in the main channel into Morro Bay Harbor. The north side of the channel was glassy because the breeze from the north was interrupted by the Rock. It was here that we found 25 – 30 sea otters in a fairly tight group taking advantage of the conditions. Most were very relaxed. Some were self-grooming. Some were sleeping.
There were at least 5 mothers that were in various stages of grooming their pups. The pups seemed very large and we wondered when they’d wean. The entire pack was very close to the rocky shoreline and the bicycle/walking path above. At times an otter or two would drift within 20 feet of the rocks making for wonderful photo opps. We watched through binoculars and kept shooting for about an hour.
