2019 02-18 Llano Seco

Our trip north to the Llano Seco Unit of the Sacramento NWR got off to a great start as we encountered a magnificent adult red-shouldered hawk on a fencepost along a street no more than 1½ miles from our home. Our luck at the viewing platform and general Llano Seco area was not so great. There were a few pintails and coots in the main pond, and a lone harrier buzzed the ducks once before heading off to the south and out of view. The snow geese could be seen in the far distant ponds. Nevertheless, everything is green in the north Central Valley, with loads of water everywhere. Skies were clear and bright with nice views of very white Snow Mountain in the Mendocino National Forest.
