It was an overcast day with faint sun at times, but good lateral visibility. We drove to the ag field hot spot to check for ferruginous hawks. There were several ferruginous hawks in the area, six easily visible…perhaps more in binocular range. Also present were numerous large red-tailed hawks. It was our first time at this location without seeing northern harriers.
Most of the hawks were perched atop farm irrigation equipment, trees along the western border, and telephone poles (also to the west). Many of the hawks were skittish and uncooperative when it came to photography, however we did glean a few magic moments, particular with our target species.
