GREY GHOST MEGA
Our first visit to the San Luis National Wildlife Refuge was very interesting. We only had time (2 hours) to drive the main loop and will need to return with more time to drive the 2 other loops. We did see a small herd of Tule Elk in the distance at one point. We also saw what we believed to be a red-tailed hawk sitting in its nest. By far the high points of this visit were times spent watching and photographing 3 grey ghosts. They were not together but were working in adjacent territory. One individual, in particular, came close to the road on numerous occasions as it was hunting voles and probably the many ground squirrels that were scampering around. Lots of water. Too late for geese, swans, cranes.
