Following a lead posted in a central valley birding listserv, we took to the road again through the Delta. Per usual we decided to take the back roads and in the process has some wonderful looks at the unique scenery. A significant part of the trip was traveling south along the edge of the Mokelumne River south to the Highway 12 bridge (over the Sacramento River).
East of the bridge, on Highway 12 we did find the reported Swainson's aggregation. There were a dozen or so hawks sitting on the ground in an alfalfa field. Another dozen were flying and soaring. Some were so high in the sky they looked like specks among the subtropical puffs of clouds. Once in a while a couple of hawks interacted with one another other in the air. Most of our photography was of flying birds which were, unfortunately, a bit distant for my lenses. A few great white egrets were also in the field.
