2020 09-09 Yolo By-Pass
-
By the time we reached the By-Pass around 10am the dense haze and smoke from the west had moved in to obscure the sky and sun. We ran the roadways and were surprised to see the diversity of raptors and other birds. Raptors included: white-tailed kites, northern harriers, Swainson’s hawk, red-tailed hawks, and an American kestrel.
A few additional photos were taken of a pair of grebes, some great white egrets, and an overhead silhouette of a white pelican.
Anyone who has looked at a map of the Yolo By-Pass knows that there is a deep water shipping channel just north of the refuge and behind a tall berm. Today we hit the jackpot and watched the 179.99 x 30 m bulk carrier cargo vessel "Hunan" move slowly north from the Port of Stockton to the Port of Sacramento, a ten hour trip. Only the upper portion of the ship was visible above the berm, and it was kind of eerie to see it sliding along.
