A trip around the driving loop revealed numerous raptors and egrets. Conditions were bright and sunny with no wind. There was a slight haze in the distance. The hunting areas are still off-limits to nature and wildlife lovers. Most of the ponds are fully flooded now.
Raptors included a single harrier, a couple of red-shouldered and one or two red-tailed hawks. Egrets included great white egrets, a snowy egret and a great blue heron.
Little to no shorebird action was observed, and the area was devoid of geese but full of ducks.
The best shots were of a calm great white egret and a few nice hawks. Also, a small flock of American white pelicans circled around for a few minutes.
A short side trip to northern Yolo County found a nice potato-head (burrowing owl).
