Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge
MLK day: the freeways were empty but Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge was crowded. It was hazy and sunny with temperatures in the 50s. It was a great day for viewing panoramas with nice air quality and clarity.
Highlights of the trip included: five or six harriers, 100 coots, not quite as many snow geese as last week, quite a few greater white-fronted geese were still there. Red-tailed hawks were in the trees AND mixed with turkey vultures in the only kettle we saw. There were half a dozen great white egrets, including one that was feeding on a medium-sized rodent.
The showstoppers of course, perhaps the reason why so many people were there on MLK day, were the eagles. We watched quite a few bald eagles divided equally between adults and juveniles.
The air quality was good and there were some really nice views of Snow Mountain and the Sutter Buttes.
