2022 03-01 Lahaina

On March 1, 2022 we boarded another Pacific Whale Foundation vessel, the “Ocean Discovery,” from 1130a-130p out of Lahaina Harbor. The Channel once again had spouts and breaches all around, as far as the eye could see. Most sightings were cow-calf-escort trios. The little calves were actively breaching and attempting some tail throws. A few adults breached, too, and there were a couple of nice pectoral fin-slapping sessions. At one point a mom and calf came towards the boat and passed right under the feet of their fans on the bow. The amazing water clarity greatly enhanced the viewing and in-water photography. A couple of malolo (Flying fish, Potanichthys xingyiensis) were spotted…hard to photograph!
