Clear skies with an air temperature of 54°F and a light breeze prevailed all morning. Many of the pods had some water as did the major irrigation canals. In addition, all the roads within the public portion of the refuge were open and we traversed them all during our 2-hour visit. Sightings included a couple of red-tailed hawks, numerous northern harriers including at least one gray ghost (who knows if we saw the same individual multiple times?). There was a great horned owl sitting in a nest. Egrets and herons were abundant, and one pond had a couple of swans. Red-winged blackbirds were everywhere, but their yellow-headed cousins, reported on social media, were not. Near the bridge by the pump station, we found an American kestrel. And, perhaps one of the most exciting photographic subjects was a beaver dam.
