Sunflowers
-
We stumbled upon vast fields of sunflowers as we moved through the northern Central Valley of California looking for hawks, falcons, owls and other animals to photograph.
Sunflowers are grown in June and July for the purpose of supplying seeds for farmers in other parts of the world that raise them for oil and confectionery purposes. The plants are tall, as much as 8 feet, and grown in rows on large farm plots. Rows of females are interrupted about every 8 rows by a line of male plants. The male plants are much shorter and have a smaller flower. Plants are pollinated by honey bees that are provided by apiaries with clusters of boxes along the edge of the fields approximately every 20 or 30 meters. When the sun is shining and the flowers are in their prime, the large fields are a sight to behold.
